In 2017, Ken, Jan, and Jake from Garden Ponds embarked on a remarkable journey to Java, Indonesia. Their destination was the heart of the once-great Majapahit Kingdom—an ancient Hindu-Buddhist empire that, at its height, ruled much of Southeast Asia and rivaled the Mongol Empire in influence. The purpose of this journey was to immerse themselves in the rich artistry and deep wisdom of the Majapahit era, and to bring a piece of that legacy back for others to experience.
At Garden Ponds, we’ve long been passionate about sharing artistic pieces—particularly statues of gods and goddesses—that not only beautify a space but also carry deep spiritual and cultural significance. This journey gave us the opportunity to study original Majapahit statues firsthand, many of which were uncovered from ruins and preserved with great care. From this, we gained valuable insights into their authentic forms, symbolism, and craftsmanship.
One of the most remarkable aspects of the trip was meeting local artisans—craftspeople whose skills have been passed down through generations since the time of the Majapahit Kingdom. In many villages, nearly every resident is skilled in transforming hard stone into exquisite, high-quality statues. Recognizing the extraordinary talent of these artists, Garden Ponds is proud to bring their creations to our shop in Hawaii, making these cultural treasures accessible to our community.
